At Buttercups Nursery, our dedicated SEN department is at the heart of everything we do. We have three experienced on-site SENCos who work every day to ensure that every child’s individual needs are recognised, understood, and supported, no matter how big or small the concern may be. We are proud to support more children with additional needs than any other nursery in our local area, creating an environment where every child is welcomed, included, and given the opportunity to flourish.
Our SENCos work closely with a wide range of professionals, including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, educational psychologists, health visitors, and local authority teams. We collaborate with Young Somerset to offer parent workshops and referrals to services they provide. Through regular communication and collaborative planning, we ensure each child receives consistent, personalised support. We advocate for our families, complete referrals, attend multi-agency meetings, contribute to assessments, and do everything we can to secure the right provision and opportunities for every child.
We take a truly holistic approach, recognising that supporting a child means supporting the whole family. We build strong, trusting relationships with parents and carers, offering guidance, reassurance, practical advice, and a listening ear throughout their journey. We understand that every family’s experience is unique, and we work closely with them to ensure they feel informed, involved, and empowered every step of the way.

Our dedicated SEND team is led by our Lead SENCo, Zoe. Alongside her is deputy SENCo’s Nicola and Laura.
Zoe works closely with children, families, and our nursery team to understand each child’s individual needs and help them flourish in their own unique way. Zoe and the team work together to identify individual needs, create tailored support plans, build safe and trusting relationships with children, support families, and provide guidance to our staff. We also work hard to support children learning English as an additional language.
Together our SEN team help to create an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, confident, and able to reach their full potential.

Inclusion is embedded in everything we do. We believe every child deserves to learn, play, and grow alongside their peers, regardless of their individual needs or abilities. Our nursery is carefully designed to be a calm, nurturing, and accessible environment, with dedicated inclusion rooms, sensory spaces, and tailored resources that enable children to feel safe, regulated, and confident. Activities are adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring every child can participate fully in nursery life and experience success. We celebrate every achievement, however big or small, and encourage children to develop independence, confidence, and positive relationships.
Whether a child requires additional strategies within the classroom, one-to-one or two-to-one support, or specialist interventions, we tailor our approach to meet their individual needs. Our aim is to ensure every child feels valued, respected, and included, giving them the best possible start in life while providing families with the confidence that they are supported every step of the way.

Our inclusion and sensory rooms serve many purposes. Of course the main purpose of these rooms are to create a safe environment to stimulate, support and help regulate children – especially when they are feeling overwhelmed or frustrated in their previous environment. We host settling in sessions in these rooms to allow children a safe and engaging environment when first entering Buttercups. We also use these rooms when children receive additional services, such as sessions with a speech & language therapist or physiotherapists.
